Bhopal : A teenaged Dalit girl set ablaze for resisting a molestation attempt succumbed to her injuries in a Madhya Pradesh town Friday.
Vineeta, 17, a resident of Shahgarh in Sagar district, died at the district hospital Friday. She had been set on fire by four youths who had tried to molest her on Tuesday.
“Shahgarh-resident Vineeta, 17 years, set on fire by the eve teasers Tuesday was battling for life in the district hospital with third degree burns but she could not be saved,” the police said Friday.
Four people – Jaggi, Kallu, Manoj and Prajapati – passed some lewd comments at her while she was returning home Tuesday evening. When she protested, they doused her with kerosene and set her on fire, a police official said.
The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and violating the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and taken two of the four youths into custody. The other two are absconding.
The police said that the four accused had an old enmity with the girl’s family and both sides had filed complaints against each other.
This is the second case of a Dalit girl being burnt alive for protesting eve teasing in the past week. In the earlier case, around eight people had burnt alive a Dalit girl, Pooja Chowdhary, in Sihora town of Jabalpur district Sunday night after she opposed their bid to molest her. Police could arrest only six of the accused.
