Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh government Friday, on the eve of International Women’s Day, issued orders to remit sentences of women prisoners, official sources said here.
The order, issued by the jail department, said women prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment after Dec 18, 1978 and those who have undergone 14 years of imprisonment would be released unconditionally.
Women prisoners who have not been convicted for life imprisonments and have served half of their sentence as of March 8, 2008 would also be released.
The jail department has, however, decided not to give remission in the sentences of those prisoners whose crime is being investigated by Delhi Special Police Establishment or any other agency empowered under any central Act.
Besides, the women who are habitual offenders or are undergoing imprisonment for not furnishing security would also not get the benefit of this decision.
The women prisoners found guilty of serious crimes like corruption and terrorism would also not get any remission in their sentences.
