India, Russia sign $1 billion deal for upgradation of MIG – 29 planes

New Delhi : India and Russia signed an estimated one billion dollar deal to upgrade 92 Mig-29 fighters.

The upgradation will extend lifespan of the planes by 40 years.

Media reports quoting official sources said Russian RAC-Mig company which signed the deal on Friday with Indian Defence Ministry will equip the planes with the latest avionics.

Under another deal awaiting approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security, 52 Mirage 2000 fighters will be upgraded to bring them to advanced level of French Air Forces Mirages.

The Mig 29 fighter planes will also be equipped with longer range beyond visual range air-to-air missiles, high accuracy guided missiles to destroy ground targets and smart aerial bombs.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister A K Antony has said India was engaged with Russia to work out a new price and delivery schedule for the Aircraft Carrier Admiral Gorshkov.

The Russians are demanding 1.2 billion dollars for the warship, media reports quoting informed sources said and added the two sides could limit the cost escalation on the warship to between 600-900 million dollars.

Gorshkov has the capacity to carry 2000 sailors while its sea endurance is of 30 days.
