Mumbai : Goa Governor S.C. Jamir Sunday morning took additional charge as Maharashtra governor at the Raj Bhavan here after he was administered the oath of office by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar.
Jamir, 77, was appointed by President Pratibha Patil after the resignation of governor S.M. Krishna last week. Prior to his arrival at the Raj Bhavan, Jamir was given the ceremonial Guard of Honour by the Mumbai Police.
Jamir will deliver the customary budget session address to the joint session of the Maharashtra legislative assembly and council Monday.
He was born in 1931 in Ungma village in Nagaland and became the Goa governor in 2004. He studied to be a lawyer.
He entered politics during his college days at the Allahabad University and was elected the first Lok Sabha member from Nagaland in 1961 and has served in various capacities at the central government, including as a minister.
Jamir was first elected to the Nagaland assembly in 1971 and has an unbroken record of winning every time he contested. He became chief minister of the state in 1980 and went on to have the longest tenure in that coveted post.
