Kashmir Police Says it Killed 33 Militants in 2 Months

Srinagar, India : The police and the security forces have killed 33 militants, including 16 foreigners, in joint operations within the first two months of the year, and arrested over a 100 others, official sources said.

Several top commanders of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and the Al Badr groups were among the slain militants, they said.

In January, the police and the army killed 13 militants, eight of whom were foreigners, while the police arrested 70 trained militants including 15 upper ground workers.

Four grenade explosions and one IED blast took place within the period.

The police said that during the month, the militants carried out three attacks on civilians in which three persons died and one was injured.

Fifteen incidents of firing took place in January, with the police and the militants entering into a cross fire five times, it said, adding that one SPO was killed, and two SPOs and four troopers injured.

In February, the police and the army conducted joint operations killing 20 militants, eleven of whom were foreigners. Thirty four militants, including 12 upper ground workers, were arrested during the month.

The security forces, accompanied by the police clashed with militants 10 times which left 2 security men dead and three injured.

The police said that two grenade blasts were carried out during the period, and militants opened fire on civilians six times.
