The victims were being transported to hospital in the Moneragala district where several similar attacks have been reported in recent weeks, police said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the government has blamed previous attacks on Tamil Tiger guerrillas who are fighting for an independent homeland for minority ethnic Tamils on the island.

The latest attack came two days after the Tigers accused government forces of infiltrating a rebel-held area of the island`s north and setting off a roadside explosion that killed a Tamil legislator and his driver.
