Vidyavati said that she was happy to see her son. “I hope Manjunath gets the best treatment,” she told reporters after meeting her son.

Manjunath’s dream to succeed came crashing down when he met with a serious car accident May 1, 2002. He was 27 then. Manjunath was going home from Nashville in the US when his car spun out of control and hit a tree. His spine was badly injured, rendering him immobile.

As his parents could not afford his treatment, Manjunath stood virtually abandoned by them for eight long years. “We were not in a position to finance his treatment. He was getting treated in the US,” she said. Vidyavati is based in Koppal, Karnataka.

Manjunath was brought to Delhi March 5 in an ambulance from Northside Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, to the Palam airport, from where he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital.

The hospital administration is doing everything possible to stabilise Manjunath’s condition.

“Investigations suggest that Manjunath has severe chest infection. There are other complications as well. He is being accordingly treated. We have put him on ventilator, and hope he stabilises soon,” said Jagdish Prasad, hospital superintendent.
