Washington : New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has acknowledged that he had engaged in wrongdoing but did not confirm a story in The New York Times that he has been linked by investigators to a prostitution ring.
Spitzer apologized to his family and the public. “I failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself,” he said Monday at a press conference in New York.
“I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family,” Spitzer said. He did not take questions from reporters, but signalled he has no intention of resigning, saying he sought to rebuild public trust.
“We sought to bring real change to New York, and that will continue,” he said.
Spitzer was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute in a hotel in Washington last month, The New York Times reported. The governor had begun informing senior aides of his involvement in the ring after being told of the investigation by federal officials Friday.
Spitzer is married and has three children. He wife of 21 years, Silda, stood beside him at the news conference.
Spitzer began serving as governor in 2006 and prior to that was the state’s top prosecutor. He had a reputation as a tough lawman, cracking down on Wall Street for wrongdoings and going after prostitution rings.
