U.S. soldier killed in bomb attack in southern Iraq

Baghdad : An American soldier was killed by a roadside bomb attack near the city of Diwaniya, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

The soldier died of wounds sustained by the blast which hit his combat patrol on Tuesday near the predominantly Shiite city, some 180 km south of Baghdad, a military statement said.

Two U.S. soldiers were also wounded by the attack and were transported to a military medical facility for treatment, it said.

The name of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

The latest death bring the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq to about 3,985 since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
