US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced Fallon”s resignation and its acceptance, although he denied any differences.

Fallon will leave leadership of the US Central Command, with jurisdiction on the Middle East, including Iraq and Afghanistan, now occupied by the Pentagon.

Esquire magazine recently revealed Fallon had angered US President George W. Bush because he shamelessly challenged his threats to start a war against Tehran.

Journalist Thomas P.M. Barnett, author of the Esquire article, said Fallon discussed his problems with the Republican administration.

US media reported that several US Army officials are opposed to an intervention in Iran, among them Adm. Michael Mullen, head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his predecessor Gen. Peter Pace.
