Amman : Some Jordanian lawmakers called for the expulsion of Israeli and Danish ambassadors in Amman during the Lower House session held on Wednesday, local daily the Jordan Times said on Thursday.
Some angry lawmakers took turns in condemning Israel’s military actions in Gaza over the past two weeks, proposing that deputies vote to expel Israel’s ambassador to send a message of outrage to the Jewish state and make it reconsider its actions, the report said.
Lawmaker Hamzah Mansour, head of the Islamic Action Front (IAF),the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, said “Israel is committing war crimes and that Jordan must act to honor the victims.”
The deputies called on the international community to hold Israel responsible for its actions, which killed over 120 Palestinians, and to support the Palestinians.
During the session, lawmakers also called for the expulsion of Danish ambassador in protest against the republication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in Danish newspapers.
About 17 Danish dailies reprinted last month a drawing featuring Prophet Muhammad’s head with a turban that looked like a bomb with a lit fuse.
The cartoons were first published in the Jyllands-Posten newspaper two years ago, leading to widespread angry protests in the Muslim world.
The two proposals of expulsion, however, were not put to vote.
The Parliament has the constitutional power to expel any ambassador from Amman, but such a decision must be first endorsed by the Senate.
