The charge referred to the alleged illegal import of a BMW automobile. The remaining six accusations were dropped on March 5 and 12.

Thanks God, suffering is over, Zardari´s lawyer Farooq Naik said at a press conference in Rawalpindi after assuring that “truth have prevailed today.”

Zardari was arrested after Bhutto was forced to give up the government leadership in 1996. The couple was charged with embezzling millions of dollars, but both of them pleaded not guilty.

After Bhutto’s murder on December 17, 51-year old Zardari took over the leadership of the Pakistani People’s Party (PPP) that won parliamentary elections on February 18.

The dismissal of all previous pending charges allows Zardari to become the main candidate to the country’s new prime minister position.
