In a ceremony attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, the agreement noted the need to contribute to peace and regional stability by establishing normal relations.

Khartoum and N’Djamena have charged each other of backing hostile groups involved in failed coups against eachother, while UN humanitarian agencies consider the common Chad-Darfur (Sudan) region volatile due to non-stop traffic of refugees and armed groups.

Both countries commit to stopping the armed militias and preventing the use of their territories to destabilize each other.

They also promise to appoint a group of African foreign ministers as observers who are to monitor the pact’s enforcement through monthly meetings.

This bilateral summit ran along the Islamic Conference Organization Summit with the mediation of the President of Senegal Abdoulaye Wade.
