Although the JMM has fielded Kishore Lal, a former Lok Sabha MP, independent Parimal Nathwani filed his nomination with the backing of 11 JMM legislators and one of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

Five RJD legislators have also extended support to independent candidate R.K. Anand. He represented Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha 2000-06. Presently, Anand is president of the Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA).

The JMM decision to field Kisore Lal has surprised both the RJD and the Congress.

According to RJD state president Gautam Sagar Rana, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad gave his backing to Durga Soren, son of Shibu Soren, for the Rajya Sabha election. But the JMM fielded Kishore Lal.
