Research to create bees without stings in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore : The Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) here will be researching on a project to create bees without stings.

The National Resource Development Board of the Department of Biotechnology has sanctioned the project “Morphometry and phylo-geography of honey bees and stingless bees”, a press release here said.

Two universities will be involved in the project.

The TNAU will work on bio-ecology of stingless bees and evolve improved bee management techniques.

The University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwar, Karnataka, will coordinate the research on honeybees.

The studies for the three-year project will be done in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir.

The projects will document the biodiversity of the bees in 30 different agro-climatic zones in these states.

The genetic makeup of native honeybee species will also be studied in detail for the first time.
