Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) : Unable to track the donors in the international kidney transplant racket run by Amit Kumar, dubbed as “Doctor Horror”, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is distributing leaflets in Uttar Pradesh asking them to contact the agency.
“We have distributed leaflets in Moradabad district informing the people about the probe and asking the donors to contact us. This would help in investigations,” CBI’s special director M.L. Sharma said Monday on the sidelines of a function here.
The Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Police forces Jan 24 busted the racket run from a guest house in Gurgaon, a suburb of the national capital.
It was on the complaint of a labourer in Moradabad that the police stumbled upon the racket with international ramifications.
“We have also sent Letters Rogatory (LRs) to Canada, Greece and Turkey to get more details about Amit Kumar and the recipients of the kidneys,” Sharma said.
The LRs from the designated court through the external affairs ministry seek details about the money stashed by Amit Kumar abroad and the details of the patients coming from these countries.
Amit and his associates allegedly obtained kidneys from poor labourers illegally, often under coercion, and transplanted these on to patients from India and foreign countries, including Turkey, Greece, Canada, the US, Britain and the Gulf region.
Sharma praised Canada for its cooperation in the investigations.
“Canada has been cooperating in the process and would also help in restricting the sale of his properties in the country,” Sharma said.
