New Delhi : With Holi, the festival of colours in which water gets wasted, round the corner, students of Delhi University have organised a festival to sensitise people about the value of water.
The five-day festival Jal Tarang 2008 aims to sensitise people, especially the youth, about water’s value. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the festival March 17. It concludes with Holi colour festival Saturday.
Amrita Bahari, president of Delhi University Students Union, said to connect the masses with the message of Jal Tarang the students have decided to wrap it up in a variety of colourful cultural shows.
“The significance of the festival being organized now, just before Holi and on the World Water Day Saturday, is to reiterate the message that one should be careful while using water. Holi is a festival in which a lot of water gets wasted and we can really do much better by saving it,” said Bahari.
“Dance, music, poetry recitation, mimicry shows…in order to reach out to the masses and give them the message, we have organized a number of cultural shows all on the same theme- water,” Bahari told IANS.
The festival, now on at Dilli Haat, will feature dance performances by international students of the university, including Russian and Turkish students.
“Jal Tarang is an annual festival but it’s for the first time that a students union has come to organize it with help from Force, an NGO working on water issues. Most of the performers are students.”
A music band performance by visually impaired students is also a part of the bouquet on the offering.
