New Delhi : The government is proposing to set up two internationa-size shipyards, one on the east coast and the other on the west coast of India, Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu, informed the Rajya Sabha Thursday.
“The nodal agencies, Ennore Port Ltd and Mumbai Port Trust, have been authorized to appoint consultants to identify three or four alternative sites at west coast and east coast each,” the minister said.
The minimum land requirement for setting up international shipyard is 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land. Also, it must have waterfronts of about 2.5 km in length.
The ministry has already requested maritime states to identify suitable locations for setting up of shipyard.
The Karnataka government has identified Tadri Port and Honne Beach, the Kerala government has identified Poovar in Thiruvananthapuram while the Orissa government has identified Nuagarh, Palur, Gopalpur and Bahuda Muhana.
Gujarat has identified a few stretches at Salaya, Jodiya, Mundra, Chanch, Pipavav and Tuna. The Andhra Pradesh Government has identified Vodarevu in Prakasam district. West Bengal has not identified any site for the proposal.
An international size shipyard may build and repair ships up to the size of Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) which has the carrying capacity of 300,000 tonnes.
