New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) Former chief cricket selector Kiran More stated Monday that it was he and the then national coach Greg Chappell had prepared the ground for grooming Mahendra Sinmgh Dhoni’s elevation as captain, though the present top brass of Indian cricket board is taking all the credit for it.
More also said consulting Sachin Tendulkar on important team matters was nothing new and his views were always taken even during his tenure.
“Sachin’s suggestion has always been influential and he was always consulted on important matters because his stature in Indian cricket is so high,” More said on the sidelines of an Indian Cricket League function here.
“Dhoni’s selection as the captain of the team was not sudden brainwave, it was discussed even when we were there,” More said.
More also said Dhoni was right in demanding the players he wanted and he should get the credit for the success in Australia.
“Had the team lost in Australia, he would have received all the flak. It is very important to take the word of the captain because he is leading the team out in the middle and he knows what he wants,” More said.
The former India wicket-keeper said Anil Kumble had done a tremendous job as Test skipper.
“Anil deserves more credit because of the way he handled the team in a crisis situation in Australia.”
More said Chappell should be given credit for the youth policy that has shown results because it was he who originally mooted the idea that is bearing fruit now.
“It was Chappell who insisted on having youth in the side and experimented a lot. It is now showing results,” he said.
