Islamabad : Nawaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), Tuesday reiterated that the new government will review the countrys role in the US-led war on terror.
“The situation has been changed, a truly representative parliament has come into being and all decisions will be presented before the parliament”, he said, adding that the peoples representatives will review Musharraf’s policy in the last six years.
Nawaz Sharifs party has formed a coalition government at the center with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and is the main rival of President Musharraf.
His government in 1999 was ousted by Musharraf in a bloodless coup and sent into exile for a decade.
This was the first meeting between any top US official and Pakistanis leader after Feb 18th elections and Benazir’s assassination in December last year.
The meeting lasted for more than 40 minutes and took place amid the newly elected Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani who took oath of his office.
The focus of meeting revolved around security and terrorism related issues and bilateral cooperation in this regard, official sources told KUNA. However, said sources, matters related to PML-Ns demand that Musharraf quits his office also came under discussion.
“We discussed terrorism, we informed them our point of view is that since 9/11 all decisions were made by one man”, said Nawaz Sharif.
Sharif said the new government will review previous governments counter-terrorism policy and a parliamentary committee will be set up in this regard.
He said that though he wanted peace around the world, he did not want his country to be turned into a murder-house to achieve that.
“We want to see peace in every corner of the world and we want to see peace in Pakistan also. We do not want that in order to give peace to others we turn our own country into a murder house”, said Nawaz Sharif.
“Just as the Americans want to protect themselves against terrorism, we want our villages and towns not to be bombarded”, he said.
John Negroponte also held a meeting with President Musharraf and held discussions over political as well as security situations in the country, said sources.
Nawaz talking to reporters asked Musharraf to resign from his post in the best interest of the nation. However, on the contrary, Prime Minister Gilani addressing a gathering in the Prime Minister house, also attended by Musharraf, said that the President is a part of the parliament and the new government will strengthen the parliament.
