The story began when a 16-year-old boy was found in the Latvian city of Daugavpils lacking any form of ID. The boy’s ‘foster’ mother had recently been sentenced to serve time in prison, and during the process of determining his next foster parents, it came to light that the boy had no documents whatsoever and his origins were entirely unknown.

Upon being questioned, the woman said her former husband had brought the boy from the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan in 1992.

The police then compared the boy’s DNA with that of a woman who had her baby son stolen in the city in 1991. The results of the DNA check confirmed on Tuesday that she was his true mother. Both the boy and his mother are now preparing to be reunited.
