Patna : In yet another case of mob violence, a man from a dalit family was beaten to death in a Bihar town, the police said Wednesday.
The victim, Bharat Dom, was beaten to death in Daulatganj are of Chapra town Tuesday, according to the police.
The police said a mob caught the man in his mid-40s on suspicion of having stolen a cow from the house of Amarnath Pandey.
“He was beaten to death with bricks and bamboo sticks,” the police said.
A murder case has been lodged, but no suspect has been identified.
The incident comes a day after an elderly man was reportedly lynched in a village in Bihar’s Munger district when he intervened to save his grandson in a dispute over a love affair. The police have arrested three accused in this case.
In the last two and a half months, nearly a dozen cases of lynching have been reported across the state.
In rural Bihar, “mob justice” is common. Last year, over three dozen similar incidents were reported and many more may have gone unnoticed.
The worst lynching case was reported in September last year when 10 men from the underprivileged Kueri community were beaten to death in Vaishali district on suspicion that they were thieves. Later, a high-level probe found that the men were innocent.
