Chennai : Hashim Amla was unbeaten on 85 as South Africa made 304 for four wickets at the end of the first day in the first Test against India here Wednesday.
South Africa won the toss and openers Neil McKenzie (94) and captain Graeme Smith (73) scored half-centuries. For India, Harbhajan Singh and captain Anil Kumble picked up two wickets each.
