A statement here said the soldiers were fired upon in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. However, it did not mention the district where the attack took place.

The statement said there was direct fire on the troops on Wednesday.

Names and nationalities of the dead and injured soldiers were not revealed, as it was against NATO policy to reveal names prior to the relevant national authority doing so.

The majority of the soldiers stationed in the Helmand province are British.

The Taliban have once again mounted attacks on troops in Helmand and other southern provinces with the warming in the weather.

Earlier in the week, Taliban commander Mullah Biradar, in a statement, said they were flexing muscles for the upcoming spring offensive against the Afghan and foreign troops.

The Afghan government commented on the Talbian statement saying its troops were fully prepared and equipped to avert any militant threat.

Last year, NATO troops launched a counter operation in some southern areas, considered to be the hotbeds of insurgency and providing pockets of support for the militants.

According to officials, around 500 militants were killed while the rest were flushed out and were kept on the defensive as a result of the NATO’s counter-operation strategy.
