“Within Europe itself the most apt philosophy or guiding principle would be what Mahatma Gandhi said, “be the change in what you want to see in the world,” Pachauri told a session of the Climate Change Committee of the European Parliament in Brussels Wednesday evening.

“I think Europe can lead by example. Europe can develop technologies, develop approaches by which I think the rest of the world can also emulate your example,” said the 2007 Nobel peace prize laureate.

He noted that certain impacts of climate change would obviously have the potential of disturbing stability of communities in several parts of the world which can lead to major migratory movements.

Earlier, speaking at a press conference , Pachauri who chairs the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said the EU target of reducing CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2020 was “extremely inspiring” for the rest of the world.
