Deputy White House Press Secretary Tony Fratto’s comments came after U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday to meet leaders of its new government. The new Pakistani government, under the leadership of now Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, plans to review its role in Washington’s war on terror.

The two Security authorities’ visit to Pakistan is part of an effort to reinstate relations with the current Pakistani leadership who were opposed to President Pervez Musharraf, a longtime U.S. ally especially in the war on terror.

Fratto said that the White House hopes for a “continued strong relations with Pakistan,” and said that the United States’ “priorities… [are] defeating the threat of terror in and from Pakistan.”
