German gov’t to stay away from Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony

Berlin : No member of the German cabinet will attend the opening ceremony of the Bejing Olympic Games, deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg announced here Friday at a routine weekly press briefing.

He also confirmed that Chancellor Angela Merkel had “at no point of time any intention of being a guest at the Olympics, either at the opening ceremony or at the sporting events.”
The latest developments notwithstanding, Germany’s Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who is also in charge of the country’s sports affairs, plans to attend the Olympic Games only 10 days after the August 8 inaugural festivities, an interior ministry spokesperson told journalists.

Meanwhile, Steg reiterated his opposition to calls for an Olympic boycott or sanctions against China over its security crackdown in China.

The Merkel spokesperson urged again a “political solution” of the Tibetan crisis.
