US congressional delegation meets Speaker of Pakistan’s Lower House

Islamabad : A visiting six-member US congressional delegation headed by Congressman John F. Tierney has met the Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament (National Assembly) Dr Fehmida Mirza, said an official statement.

The interaction between the parliamentarians of the two countries is necessary for sharing experiences, enhancing mutual understanding and benefiting from each other experiences, Dr Mirza said.

She apprised the delegation of the structure and the working of the Parliament and standing committees of the National Assembly.

The Speaker said that the newly elected parliament was answerable to their electorates and would endeavor to come up to their expectations.

She said that women empowerment was one of priorities of the new government and the parliament would do legislation to improve their lot and to do more for their education and health Care.

The Speaker said that Pakistan believed in peace and has always taken initiatives for establishing peace in the region and the world.

She appreciated the US assistance for Pakistan in socio-economic sectors of the economy.

John F. Tierney and members of the delegation congratulated Dr Mirza on her election as Speaker. Tierney said that US wanted to build strong relations with Pakistan. US also wishes democratic institutions in Pakistan to flourish.

He assured that US would continue its support for the socio-economic development and strengthening of Parliamentary institutions in Pakistan.
