“A series of steps were taken which remain unexplained but have damaged the morale of Indian farmers,” BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad told newsmen.

He asked the government to take parliament into confidence over this.

“It is now too well-known that sub-standard wheat was imported at higher prices from outside whereas the Indian farmers were paid less during the course of procurement,” he said.

“When the prices of pulses were rising enormously, in disregard to all directives, exemptions were granted to unscrupulous exporters enjoying patronage to export Indian pulses abroad and earn huge profits,” he said.

“The government has never been serious in the management of food economy.”

The BJP spokesman said: “The record of the UPA government in the last four years constitutes the biggest betrayal of ‘aam aadmi’ (common man).”
