New Delhi : A city court Thursday sentenced two people to jail for life and two others to five years of rigorous imprisonment for making and circulating fake currency notes in the capital.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajendra Kumar Shastri sentenced Kamil and Neeraj to life-terms in jail and Manoj and Abdul Sani to five years’ imprisonment.
Delhi Police had arrested them on June 7, 2001, while they were trying to sell counterfeit currency. Notes of Rs.50, 100 and 500 denominations, totally worth Rs.200,000, were found in their possession.
The police had then raided their hideout in East Delhi and recovered electronic Reserve Bank of India (RBI) blocks, a printer, monitor, computer, scanner and a keyboard besides some more currency notes of 50, 100 and 500 denominations.
“Currency is the backbone of every country and counterfeiting it is a shame. The youth involved in the crime should have helped the country by earning money but they opted for the wrong path so a punishment not less than life imprisonment will not meet the ends of justice,” the judge observed in his order.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs.30,000 on Kamil and Neeraj, and Rs.10,000 on Manoj and Abdul Sani.
All the convicts will have to undergo a further imprisonment of six months each in case they fail to pay the fines.
