The EU in a statement stressed that for any second round of the presidential election to be considered free and fair and to be a credible reflection of the free and democratic will of the Zimbabwean people, “end of violence as well as presence of the international observers is of crucial importance”.

The EU statement followed announcement of the results earlier of Zimbabwe’s presidential polls held on 29 March which show that opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai winning by 47.9 percent against President Robert Mugabe’s 43.2 percent.

But as neither candidate got the 50 percent threshold to win, a second round of polls has to take place.

Tsvangirai has been quoted saying in the past that he would not take part in a run-off unless international observers were present to monitor the polls.

Nearly five weeks’ delay of the announcement as well as post-election violence has raised serious concerns about the credibility of the process, noted the EU Presidency statement.

Slovenia holds the current EU Presidency.
