Ranchi : Officials sitting at the Jharkhand capital here can keep a virtual eye on what is happening in three jails around the state, with the setting up of a remote visual jail monitoring (RVJM) system.
“With the RVJM system, we can keep track of the activity in the jails sitting at the state headquarters,” said Sunil Kumar Barnawal, inspector general of prisons. Records can be stored for eight days.
The system was inaugurated by Chief Minister Madhu Koda here Friday. Prisons in Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Jamshedpur have been connected to it.
“Soon, 23 other jails of the state will connected through this system. The officials will be able to monitor the developments taking place inside the jails. Even security of jails will be strengthened through this system. It will also help prevent jail breaks,” said Koda.
Closed-circuit cameras have been installed in these jails.
Jharkhand has 26 jails including two central jails. Nearly 19,000 prisoners, including around 900 Maoist rebels, are lodged in them.
According to officials, 700 security personnel have been posted in different prisons against a sanctioned strength of 1,500.
