Brussels : Freedom of press is still under serious attack in various guises in many countries, and not only in autocratic ones, noted the European Commission in a statement on Saturday on the occasion of 2008 UN World Press Freedom Day.
Journalists are intimidated, censored and killed around the world because of their commitment to unbiased and truthful reporting, said the executive body of the 27-member EU and underlined its commitment to protect and promote freedom of press worldwide. EU Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, in press statements said freedom of expression needs to be supported throughout the world to enable the building of vibrant civil societies and to empower people to participate in the democratic debate.
