Bomb blast injures 12 in S Thailand

Bangkok : Thai southern insurgents on Sunday night triggered a time bomb in the country’s southernmost province of Narathiwat, injuring 12 local residents attending the annual Red Crescent fair, Thai news network The Nation reported on Monday.

The bomb, which was hidden in a garbage bin, near a concert stage, exploded at 10 p.m. (1500 GMT), injuring 12 people.

The charity fair was being held at a park in the Muang district of Narathiwat.

Police were quoted as saying that the bomb was believed to weigh about 1 or 2 kilograms and it was detonated by a digital watch.

Thailand’s three southernmost provinces — Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani have been troubled with insurgency-related violence which has claimed more than 3,000 lives since it resumed in early 2004.
