Deputy Police Superintendent Utpal Ganguly has said he will recommend departmental action against the policemen who did nothing while six-year-old Sheikh Shamim was being beaten up by his neighbour Rafiqul Sheikh in Hariharpara village of Murshidabad district Sunday afternoon.

The four policemen were Monday sent to the Berhampore police lines, about 211 km from Kolkata, and asked to stay there until further orders.

“Rafiqul, 28, had locked himself in his house for the last two days. Suddenly Sunday afternoon he opened the door and started chasing everyone around him with a thick log. He managed to catch six-year-old Shamim and broke the kid’s skull with the log,” Ganguly told IANS.

“According to villagers, Rafiqul was mentally unstable. But what surprises me is – how could the four policemen stand and stare while the kid was being beaten to death? They should have shot Rafiqul in his legs at once,” he said.

Rafiqul has been put in the Hariharpara police station lockup.
