Islamabad : The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is likely to announce a new date for by-elections under the pressure, local newspaper DAWN reported on Wednesday.
The ECP will probably make a fresh announcement within a couple of days after severe criticism from all major political parties and civil society organizations, said the report.
Asif Ali Zardari, Co-Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party held talks with Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani here on Tuesday and both of them decided that the by-elections should be held in June.
The by-elections were scheduled to be held on June 18. The ECP made a statement on Monday that they should be postponed for two months in view of the law and order situation in North West Frontier Province and the forthcoming budget sessions of National and Provincial Assemblies.
The ECP’s announcement drew fire from various political parties which claimed that a postponement might led to uncertainty of the political situation in the country.
Sources privy to the meeting between Zardari and Gilani disclosed that Gilani would ask chief ministers of the four provinces in the country to resend the reports on law and order situation to the ECP so that by-elections could be held in June.
