Hyderabad/London : The dream of a girl from Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada city to pursue higher education in Britain was cut short as she was found murdered in her university hostel room near Birmingham.
The parents and other family members of 23-year-old Jyotirmayee were in a state of shock after receiving the news about her brutal murder. A pall of gloom descended on the family’s house in Vijayawada, about 300 km from Andhra Pradesh capital Hyderabad.
The post-graduate student was killed at her rented house in Handsworth, a suburb of Birmingham, Tuesday night.
The West Midlands police, responsible for the area in which the crime was committed, were called to a house on Montague Road in the area of Handsworth in Birmingham at 1645 hrs Wednesday, a police spokeswoman said. She said a man was in hospital with injuries. His condition was described as stable.
A post-mortem examination was to be conducted on the woman later Wednesday.
Jyotirmayee Nagasaibabu, a student of the University of Wolverhampton, was pursuing MS in public health.
The girl’s friends informed the family over phone in the early hours of Wednesday that she was killed and one of her room mates was injured in an attack by some unidentified people who allegedly broke into their room.
Jyotirmayee was living in a hostel room with three other Telugu-speaking students. The identity of the injured girl was not known.
However, the British police said that a man was found in the room with serious injuries.
“I received a call from a student of the university that some people broke into the room and attacked her. I could not believe this,” Jyotirmayee’s father Saibaba, a film distributor, told reporters at his house.
Jyotirmayee went to Britain eight months ago to pursue higher education. “She called a few days ago to inform us that she would be going to Paris on a trip sponsored by the university. Her ticket was also booked for the tour,” her mother Nagalakshmi said while crying inconsolably.
“We have not received details as to how it happened,” said Deepti, a relative of Jyotirmayee.
The family approached the Vijayawada police commissioner and local public representatives to help in bringing the body home.
In Birmigham, local press quoted Lal Miah, whose mother lives next door to the house where Jyotirmayee lived, as saying: “From what I’ve heard it sounds like it was a fight between two people.”
“The ambulance came and took one person away but we heard that one was still in there and it was a woman who had died.”
“We couldn’t believe it really. I didn’t know the people who were there. I heard they were foreign and there were a total of four of them living there,” Lal Miah said.
