“If we allow the entry of foreign lawyers in the country, then we need to allow the entry of the whole administration of the judiciary. Are we really prepared for that?” asked IIBA president Lalit Bhasin.

He added that India had enough legal expertise and there was no need to allow foreign lawyers to practice here.

“Legal services should not be compared with other services, and entry in this profession should not be allowed,” Bhasin said.

IIBA is organising a two-day conference on “New Business Laws of India” May 9 and 10. It will conclude with a debate on “Should India’s legal services sector be opened up? Why and why not?”
