Pyongyang : A team of U.S. nuclear specialists arrived Thursday in Pyongyang for discussions on a declaration on the country’s nuclear programs.
The five-member team, lead by the State Department Korea Office director Sung Kim, arrived Thursday afternoon by land from Seoul, where they arrived the previous day.
After their arrival, the team held talks with officials of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Kim declined to say whether his trip was for final discussions on the declaration on the DPRK’s nuclear programs.
“It’s part of the ongoing dialogue with respect to North Korea’s declaration,” U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Tuesday in Washington, “We’ll see what it is that North Korea decides to do.”
Kim said that he didn’t know if he would meet with DPRK top nuclear negotiator Kim Kye Gwan during the trip.
The team is scheduled to leave Pyongyang Saturday.
The six-nation talks on dismantling the DPRK’s nuclear programs stalled as Pyongyang failed to meet the Dec. 31 deadline to issue a complete declaration on its nuclear programs and materials.
This was the second trip of Kim’s team to Pyongyang in less than a month. They made a three-day visit to Pyongyang from April 22 to 24 and both sides claimed that progress was made in the discussions.
