Cairo : Spokesman of the Egyptian foreign ministry Hosam Zaki said on Friday that an urgent meeting for Arab foreign ministers is expected to be held within the next few days to examine the current Lebanese crisis.
Egypt and Saudi Arabia had rendered a request to hold the meeting at the Arab League headquarters and to discuss the issue during an Arab foreign ministers council, Zaki noted, adding that the request was conveyed to the League’s Secretary General Amr Moussa.
Earlier today, Jordan had welcomed the call for an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers to discuss the crisis in Lebanon, in light of the deteriorating security situation in Beirut.
In a related development, Chairman of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs Abdul-Raouf El-Reedy warned of consequences of the hazardously-accelerating situation in Lebanon.
He said in a press release that swift action ought to be taken by Arab leaders in order to control the situation, proposing that leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria should adopt such action due to their countries’ influential role in the region, which might salvage Lebanon from a potential civil war.
