Cairo : The Arab League Council has decided to keep its special session open in order to follow up on the Lebanese crisis, stressing that the Arab initiative must be executed to help the fellow Arab country to overcome its current dilemma.
The council affirmed in its final communique Sunday that it was paramount to execute the initiative which would lead to security and stability in Lebanon.
The council also expressed its dissatisfaction over the current armed clashes there, calling for matters to be resolved in accordance with the Lebanese constitution.
The council welcomed the way the army was dealing with the government’s decision concerning the Beirut airport’s security chief and Hezbollah’s communications network.
The Arab League called for the reopening of the road leading to Beirut’s international airport and seaports to allow for free movement of Lebanese and others.
Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Fouad Al-Siniora as well as leaders of the opposition and government loyalists were invited to a meeting set by the Arab League Council.
The council formed a committee for the meeting which would be chaired by the Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabr Al-Thani and would include the membership of the Arab League secretary-general in addition to the prime ministers of Jordan, the UAE, Bahrain, Algeria, Djibouti, Oman, Morocco and Yemen.
The council assigned the committee to head to Lebanon at once to discuss the execution of the Arab initiative before the situation deteriorates further.
