Brussels : EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, welcomed Monday “the free and orderly conduct” of the Serbian parliamentary elections held on Sunday.
“I hope that a new government can be formed rapidly, which would be strongly committed to reforms and to meeting the necessary conditions for further progress towards Europe, he said in a statement.
On his part, EU Commissioner for enlargement, Olli Rehn, welcomed “the success of the reformist forces that share European values.” “This should enable swiftly forming a new government, he said in press statements here today.
Pro-EU Serbian President Boris Tadic’s is claiming victory, but the anti-EU nationalist Radical Party says it could still form a coalition government.
Its leader Tomislav Nikolic said he would hold talks with other nationalist parties to from the new government.
