Beijing : About 130,000 people working in medical facilities in Beijing will start a month-long training course this week on coping with possible terrorist attacks during the Aug 8-24 Olympics, a newspaper here reported.
Training would focus on emergency response and dealing with nuclear, biological or chemical terrorist strikes during the games. Experts from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences would run the courses, according to The Beijing News. In case of terrorist attacks, health workers will play an important role as they are responsible for emergency first aid, hospital treatment and epidemic prevention, according to experts.
Further, medical institutions hold stocks of potentially poisonous chemical, anaesthetic and radioactive materials, as well as highly pathogenic virus samples, which all carry risks of being employed by terrorists. The Beijing municipal health bureau would evaluate the results of the exercise, the report said.

Rewards offered for information on logo infringement
Beijing: Beijing is using the carrot of huge rewards to citizens who report Olympic logo infringement cases in the run-up to the Games. Persons who step forward with information will be rewarded with five percent of what lawbreakers are fined, according to a regulation jointly issued by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce and the Legal Affairs Department of the Beijing Organising Committee.
The largest rewards will be $14,286, the regulation said. Last year, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce dealt with 95 such infringement cases and imposed $147,143 in fines. The drive was launched to step up crackdown on infringement upon the copyrights of Olympic logos, such as manufacturing and using without authorisation.

Britain vows to be competitive in sailing events
Qingdao: Stephen Park, Britain’s sailing team manager, has said that his team was trying to be as competitive as they could in all the classes when the Olympic sailing events are held here in August.
“We are expecting an exciting summer here in Qingdao and try to be as competitive as we can in every class. We have been training very hard and think we have a good chance to finish among the top six every time,” he said. According to Qingdao Olympic Committee, Britain, with China and a few other countries, has qualified for all 11 events in nine classes of the sailing competition.

World Federation of Trade Unions supports Games
Athens: The Athens-based World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) has hailed the efforts made by the Chinese people in trying to stage successful and harmonious Olympic Games. According to a union statement, the WFTU condemned the attempts to politicise the Olympics and opposed those actions to impede and jeopardise the Games.
The WFTU appealed to the working class of the world to be united and supportive to the Beijing Games. The WFTU has about 65 million members in 80 countries. Since ancient times, the Olympic games have been spreading the message of friendship, unity and peace throughout the world. They are not only a competition but a grand gathering of all the people, especially the younger generation, said the statement.
