Dubai : The United Arab Emirates (UAE) charitable organisation, Dubai Cares, has delivered 60 tonnes of relief supplies to the victims of Cyclone Nargis which ripped through parts of the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar early this month.
They included 200 multi-purpose tents, teaching materials and school supplies which will benefit children in the devastated areas.
“The temporary structures will serve as schools and child protection centres, complementing on-the-ground efforts of other non-governmental organisations,” Dubai Cares, an entity devoted to improving primary education for underprivileged children, said in a statement Wednesday.
Dubai Cares board of directors chairman Reem Al Hashimy said more than 200 locals joined the relief team in a six-hour operation to unload the shipment on board the Boeing 747 cargo plane.
“Our objective is to offer immediate aid to ensure that the children could be placed on the path of recovery by helping them begin their rehabilitation process, following the trauma suffered from the devastating cyclone,” she said.
She was hopeful that the initiative would make a difference to the victims of the tragedy which has reportedly left tens of thousands of people dead or missing, and over a million survivors in misery.
