Beirut : Fundamentalist Sunni group Fatah al-Islam, defined by Lebanese government as a terrorist group, has vowed to confront those “bowing the heads of the Sunni in Beirut” with “bloodshed,” pan-Arab Al-Hayat daily reported Thursday.
In an indirect reference to Shiite Hezbollah group, Fatah al-Islam said in a statement what happened in Beirut, “the killing, burning and humiliation to our Sunni people is not justified or accepted.”
“Anyone who wants to bow the heads of our people in Beirut” will be confronted even if the price is “blood shed,” the statement said.
The opposition led by Hezbollah fought fierce gunbattles with pro-government supporters last week after two Lebanese cabinet measures angered the Shiite group triggering the worst sectarian strife since the 1975-90 civil war.
The worst sectarian fighting left over 70 people dead and 200 wounded.
The deadly clashes ignited on May 7, one day after the Lebanese cabinet decided to cease the private communication network of Hezbollah, and remove the country’s only international airport’s security chief Gen. Wafik Shqaier for alleged links to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah considered such decisions as “a declaration of war against the resistance.”
Fatah al-Islam fought deadly battles with the Lebanese army last spring in the Palestinian camp of Nahr el-Bared in northern Lebanon.
The Lebanese army crushed most of the fighters and arrested the rest except for the leader of the group Shaker Abssi who escaped and whose whereabouts was still unknown.
