Pakistan and India had announced ceasefire along the LoC in November, 2003 as part of peace efforts between the two countries.

Guns had been silence since then.

Indian army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel A.K. Mathur has been quoted as saying that Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked firing in Kupwara sector on last Tuesday evening.

A Pakistan military spokesman denied the Indian claim of unprovoked firing by Pakistani Troops on the LoC in Neelam Valley of Kashmir.

The spokesman said that Indian Military Authorities have been informed that no incident of firing from this side of the LOC took place, as claimed, according to a statement.

A Flag Meeting is also scheduled later in the day to clarify the issue, the Pakistani statement said.

The tension surfaced ahead of the visit to Islamabad by the Indian Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee later this month to push the on-going dialogue process between the two nuclear-armed countries.

Both sides have failed to move forward on Kashmir dispute.

Pakistan and India have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir since their independence in 1947.
