Bush said that reaching a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians was possible within this year in his address to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on the Middle East.

The U.S. top official noted that “too often in the Middle East, politics has consisted of one leader in power and the opposition in jail,” adding that “the time has come for nations across the Middle East to abandon these practices, and treat their people with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

The WEF kicked off its annual meeting on the Middle East at this Red Sea resort earlier in the day. The three-day forum brings together more than 1,500 participants including heads of state and government, ministers, investors and businessmen and civil society leaders from 70 countries.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak inaugurated the meeting by giving a keynote speech at the opening session.
