According to the Israeli newspaper “Yedioth Ahronoth,” Olmert addressed the Palestinians with a strongly worded warning ahead of a scheduled meeting that would group Foreign Minister Tzipi Livin, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Sharm El-Sheikh.

He added in the onset of the weekly cabinet meeting that the three leaders would discuss the truce initiative that Egypt is working out for peace between the Palestinians and Israelis, and warned that Israel “was very close to a turning point decision concerning the intolerable situation in Gaza.” He said that “Our hope is that one day the residents of the south will lead a peaceful life.” Olmert assured the Israelis, particularly residents of the south who have been targeted with recurring missile attacks, that the United States would maintain unwavering support for Israel. Hamas, that is in charge of Gaza strip, announced Saturday that it was informed about Israel’s preliminary approval of the truce initiative.

Israeli leaders have been involved in a controversy concerning the approval of this truce, with some saying that it would grant the Palestinian brigades in Gaza “a chance to catch their breath and start rearming.”
