Yangon : There has been no outbreak of infectious diseases in the cyclone-hit areas in Myanmar in the aftermath of cyclone Nargis, state-run Radio Myanmar reported Sunday.
“Except usually occurring diseases, there is no presence of other infectious diseases,” the report quoted the National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee as saying.
It said a total of 122 medical teams, including teams from the military and civil organisations, are serving in the disaster-hit areas.
The government’s Donation Accepting and Supervision Body will coordinate with the international NGOs for the distribution of donations in cash or kind from the international community to quake victims, it said.
The national disaster preparedness committee, which is headed by the prime minister, has urged people to continue to donate for the cyclone victims without fear of fund misappropriation. There have been rumours in the past few days that relief items are being illegally diverted for sale in markets.
A deadly tropical cyclone Nargis, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, hit five divisions and states: Irrawaddy, Yangon, Bago, Mon and Kayin May 2 and 3. Irrawaddy and Yangon regions are the worst affected.
According to a latest official toll, as many as 77,738 people have been killed in the cyclone and some 55,917 are still missing.
