8 killed in election violence in eastern India

New Dehli : At least eight people have been killed in clashes between rival political parties during local Council elections in eastern India, local media reported Monday.

Supporters of the Communist Party, which governs in West Bengal state, and the Congress Party that heads the federal government, fought battles using guns and rocks on Sunday, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The violence was centered in Murshidabad district, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of the state capital Calcutta, PTI said.

Local officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Sunday’s vote was the third phase of statewide elections for local councils.
